What is sports medicine?

Are you wondering if sports medicine is the right treatment for you? Sports medicine is an umbrella term used to group together a few different branches of healthcare to better provide for those who are suffering from or wanting to prevent sports-related injuries. Under sports medicine, there is a wide range of different areas of healthcare geared towards healing and preventing injury from exercise. We offer a range of sports treatments including physiotherapy, diagnostic imaging, osteopathy surgery, testing and shockwave therapy.

Common sports-related injuries

Any kind of sports injury, both long term and short term, can be treated by our specialist sports medicine consultants. Regardless of if you’re suffering from common injuries or one that is a bit more unique, we have the expertise in-house to treat it. We can treat:

  • Achilles tendonitis: this is the overuse and inflammation of the achilles tendon, which can result in swelling, pain and/or irritation.
  • Anterior knee pain: anterior means ‘front’, meaning this is a pain in the front of the knee. It could be within the kneecap itself, or from the tendons attaching the muscles to the knee bones.
  • Breaks
  • Concussion: concussion is a common occurrence in sports, particularly in contact sports. You do not always need to lose consciousness to suffer from a concussion.
  • Golfers elbow: pain and tenderness are experienced on the inner side of your elbow which can spread into the forearm and wrist.
  • Groin pull: otherwise known as a groin strain, this is common in individuals who play sports involving running and/or jumping.
  • Hamstring strain: or a pulled hamstring, occurs when one or more the muscles stretches too far causing pain and discomfort.
  • Knee injuries
  • Peroneal tendonitis: this is caused as a result of injury to the tendons, and can result in pain on the back and/or outside of the foot
  • Plantar fasciitis: this occurs when the ligament running along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed, and can cause heel pain when walking or standing.
  • Sciatica: occurs when the sciatic nerve is irritated, this causes inflammation, pain and often some numbness in the affected leg.
  • Shin splints: these often occur through running, and can cause pain and tenderness in the front of the leg.
  • Sprains
  • Tears
  • Tendonitis: otherwise known as ankle tendonitis, this is where inflamed tendons can cause ankle pain when walking, running or jumping, and are a result of overuse.
  • Tennis Elbow: pain and tenderness are experienced on the inner side of your elbow which can spread into the forearm and wrist.

Sports medicine treatments

The treatment for your specific sports injury will depend on the nature of your injury, your medical history and what will work best for your lifestyle. Some of the sports medicine treatments we offer include:

  • Alter-G (Anti-Gravity Treadmill): This physiotherapy treatment can be used to help patients to gain more strength, improve mobility, build on their fitness and minimise stress on an injured body part of theirs.
  • Corticosteroid injections: Otherwise known as steroid injections, these can help to relieve pain if you are suffering from severe or persistent inflammation.
  • Immobilisation: Sometimes our sports specialists will recommend that the affected area is immobilised using slings, casts or splints to avoid further damage occurring.
  • Massage therapy: We offer deep tissue massage and sports massage which can help to break down knots and scar tissue, reduce aches and pains whilst improving mobility.
  • Pain relief: Pain relief may be recommended to help to reduce the pain, for pain management and to reduce inflammation and swelling.
  • Physiotherapy: This is a diverse treatment designed to help recover and restore an individual’s movement and function.
  • Shockwave therapy: Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy, (or ESWT), is a multidisciplinary device used in orthopaedics, physiotherapy, and sports medicine to provide fast pain relief and restore mobility.

Sports surgery & other procedures: Depending on the severity of your sports injury, you may require corrective treatment surgery.

No, our London based sports doctors are available to see you as and when you need it. All you need to do is book an appointment.

You should do everything possible to help prevent a sports injury occurring. We’d advise to warm up properly before you begin any physical activity or sports, and ensure you take the time afterwards to cool down. Make sure that you stay within your fitness capabilities, and also use the equipment correctly and for the right job. Doing so will help to reduce the need for sport and exercise medicine.
