Running Injuries

Just like any type of exercise, running injuries are common and are often painful. The best way to ease the severity of the injury and strengthen the injured area is through physiotherapy, which helps you get to the source of the problem instead of just masking the pain.

Common Types of Running Injuries

Below we detail a few common running injuries that the LycaHealth Physiotherapy teams can help with;

Plantar Fasciitis

The primary symptom of plantar fasciitis is the presence of pain in the bottom of the foot, from the heel into the arch. It is an especially painful condition with the first few steps in the morning, or getting up when you have been sitting for a long time in one place. It will often be sore at the beginning of an activity, reduce during the activity and then become painful again once the activity has ceased.

Causes can include:

  • Altered foot and running biomechanics
  • Incorrect shoe type
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Poor load management

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis is characterised by pain at the back of the ankle when pushing the foot up from the ground such as when walking, running or using stairs. Pain may be more prominent in the morning with the first few steps out of bed.

Causes can include:

  • Altered foot and running biomechanics
  • Incorrect shoe type
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Poor load management

Runner’s Knee

This term relates to pain at the front of the knee, usually just below the knee cap. The pain is aggravated by squatting and going up and down stairs. Stiffness in the knee after prolonged sitting is another symptom.

Causes may include:

  • Muscle imbalances around the hip and knee
  • Altered foot and running biomechanics
  • Incorrect shoe type
  • Poor load management

Iliotibial Band (ITB) Syndrome

This injury is commonly associated with pain on the outside of the knee while running or hill climbing;

Causes of this condition include:

  • Muscle imbalances around the hip and knee
  • Altered lower limb biomechanics
  • Poor running technique
  • Incorrect shoe type
  • Incorrect load management
  • Surface type

Shin Splints

Shin splints is a pain in the shin while running or walking. The pain first starts after walking or running but then progresses to persistent pain.

Causes of this condition include:

  • Muscle imbalances around the hip and knee
  • Altered lower limb biomechanics
  • Poor running technique
  • Incorrect shoe type
  • Incorrect load management

Stress Fractures

A stress fracture is a small crack or severe bruising of a bone. The small bones in the foot are particularly susceptible to this type of injury.

Causes of this condition include:

  • Incorrect load management
  • Poor running technique
  • Altered lower limb biomechanics
  • Muscle imbalances around the hip, knee and ankle
  • Low bone density
