What is the COVID-19 Coronavirus Antibody Test?

Our coronavirus antibody testing kits are able to identify whether a person has previously been infected by SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19). This has been developed based on research which has shown that for the large majority of patients who have recovered from coronavirus, they have found to produce antibodies.

We offer two types of COVID-19 coronavirus antibody testing; via a blood test or rapid test both carried out within our London clinic. These antibody tests have been specifically developed to identify if an individual has an immune response (antibodies) specifically to this strain of coronavirus. Both antibody tests are used to show whether you have been previously infected by the virus or not.

When should you have the COVID-19 Coronavirus Antibody Test?

To ensure accurate results, the antibody test should be taken at 21 days (3 weeks) or more after symptom onset. This is because the incubation period of COVID-19 ranges from between 1 to 14 days, with the majority of cases manifesting with symptoms at 3–5 days. To protect the health of our team, and minimise the risk of spreading infection in our Canary Wharf clinic, we ask patients to come in after 3 weeks.

A positive result would indicate you have been previously been affected by the virus, and a negative result shows that have not previously suffered from COVID-19 and therefore may develop the infection if exposed in the future. Currently, there is not enough research to know whether antibodies grant immunity, suggesting that you could get the virus more than once.

How does the COVID-19 antibody test work?

When your body is infected by SARS-CoV-2, it produces antibodies anything from a few days up to 2 weeks after the onset of initial symptoms. The purpose of this test is to identify the presence of antibodies, which would indicate whether an individual has previously had COVID-19 or not.

To take either the blood or rapid COVID-19 antibody test, you will need to visit our Canary Wharf, London clinic.

What happens if you think you have COVID-19 now?

If you’re displaying the signs of COVID-19 such as; fever, tiredness, dry cough and difficulty breathing or a loss of sense of smell or taste, both you, and your household will need to self isolate for 14 days.

The reliability of our tests is more than 99%. However, this is dependent on you taking the test at the right time; 14 days or more after symptom onset. If you take the test too early, you may get a negative result. However, we ask you to come for your test 21 days after symptom onset in order to protect the spread of infection in our London clinic.

If you take the rapid test, results are available in our clinic within 15 minutes. If you opt for the blood test you can expect results from the test in around 1-2 working days. The beauty of the antibody test is both the speed and accuracy of results.

Day by day, we are seeing new announcements made, restrictions being lifted and industries being able to go back to work. To help ease you into that process, it may be beneficial to test your employees to see who is currently affected, and who has previously been infected with COVID-19. We have both COVID tests available for this process.

Unfortunately, it is not yet known if a positive result from the COVID-19 antibody test means that a person will be protected from either fully or partially from future infection or how long protective immunity may last.

We would advise against taking the test at this stage, and waiting 21 days or more after symptom onset. The antibody test wouldn’t be helpful for you at this stage. Instead, we’d advise taking our at-home COVID-19 test to identify whether you are currently infected.

It costs £45 for a rapid antibody test, and £89 for a blood test to identify the antibodies.
