As a gastroenterologist with over 15 years of experience, I’ve seen how early intervention can change the course of a patient’s life. One of the most critical areas I focus on is bowel cancer – also known as colorectal cancer. It’s one of the most common cancers in the UK, but the good news is that when diagnosed early, bowel cancer can be treated effectively. That’s why it’s so important to recognise the early warning signs your body may be giving you – and to act on them.
At LycaHealth Orpington, we’ve created a modern and welcoming Endoscopy Centre, where you can get fast access to diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy. These tests are crucial for spotting issues early and providing peace of mind when it comes to your digestive health.
Bowel cancer typically develops slowly, and often, the symptoms can be subtle at first. Many patients mistake these signs for common digestive complaints such as IBS or indigestion. However, knowing the key signs to watch out for can make all the difference:
If you notice any of these symptoms lasting longer than a few weeks, it’s important to consult with a doctor. Even if you think it’s nothing serious, getting checked is always a safe bet. Early detection can dramatically improve treatment outcomes.
An endoscopy is a medical procedure that allows us to look inside your digestive system using a flexible tube with a camera at the end. There are two types of endoscopy that are particularly useful for assessing symptoms of bowel cancer:
Both procedures are quick and highly effective at spotting problems early, including signs of cancer. The process typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes, and you can often return home the same day. At LycaHealth Orpington, we offer sedation to make the procedure as comfortable as possible, so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the test.
We also have the technology to remove polyps (small growths) or take tissue samples (biopsies) for further testing. Detecting and removing polyps early on can help prevent bowel cancer from developing.
The earlier bowel cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. Early-stage bowel cancer often doesn’t cause pain, but it can be detected during a routine screening or when symptoms are still mild. For many people, a colonoscopy or endoscopy is the best way to find out what’s going on inside the gut.
At LycaHealth Orpington, we’re dedicated to providing the highest standard of care in a relaxed and friendly environment. Our Endoscopy Centre is equipped with the latest diagnostic technology, and we take pride in offering rapid access to tests – meaning no long NHS waiting lists. Whether you’re here for a routine check-up or investigating symptoms, you can expect:
We also offer sedation for patients who feel anxious about the procedure, ensuring that you’re relaxed and comfortable.
Before the procedure, we’ll go through a full consultation with you to understand your symptoms and medical history. If you’re having a colonoscopy, you’ll need to follow specific dietary instructions and take a bowel prep solution to ensure your colon is clean for the test. The test itself is relatively quick – usually no longer than 30 minutes – and you’ll be sedated to keep you comfortable.
After the procedure, you can expect to relax in a recovery area for a short time before heading home. We’ll discuss the results with you, and if necessary, arrange follow-up care or treatment options.
Your health is important, and it’s better to be proactive when it comes to any symptoms that don’t feel right. If you’ve been noticing any changes in your digestive health, don’t hesitate to book an appointment at LycaHealth Orpington. Our Endoscopy Centre is here to support you with quick, expert care.
