Foam Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins

Foam sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment used primarily for varicose veins and some spider veins.

What is Foam Sclerotherapy?

Foam Sclerotherapy is an effective method of treating smaller varicose veins and spider veins, also known as thread veins.

The Sclerotherapy treatment is performed by a Vascular Consultant and involves inserting a needle into the affected vein and administering a foamed solution which will cause the vein to permanently seal shut. Your blood will then be diverted through healthier veins and the collapsed vein will fade away.

What are the benefits of Sclerotherapy?

There are many benefits to choosing Sclerotherapy for varicose veins and spider veins including:

  • A minimally-invasive procedure, no anesthesia is required.
  • Good results for most people with an estimated success rate of 75% – 90%
  • Quick results for small veins
  • Long lasting treatment – the veins will not reappear if successfully treated
  • Cheaper than alternative treatments such as EVLT

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins but generally smaller and closer to the surface of the skin. They can appear as red or blue and are most commonly found on the legs or face.

Most commonly, sclerotherapy is used for smaller varicose veins, spider or thread veins that have become unsightly or painful. You may need multiple sessions to treat these veins. Sclerotherapy may be the better choice if you have a low pain threshold or if your skin type is not compatible with the laser.

Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy, commonly known as EVLT, generally treats larger varicose veins and treats the vein directly without the need to remove.

Your Vascular Consultant will be able to advise you on the best course of treatment for your unique situation.

Around 10% of cases, sclerotherapy doesn’t work. If this happens, your Consultant will be able to advise on alternative treatment methods, such as EVLT, to help you reach your desired results.

Results for most sclerotherapy treatments will be noticeable within 3-6 weeks. Larger veins may take 3-4 months and multiple treatments to reach the results you want.

Most people will need two to four treatment sessions to reach optimal results. Your Consultant will be able to guide you on how many sessions will be optimal for your own situation.
