Frequently Asked Questions

If you have an x-ray you will be exposed to radiation during the procedure. However, this is considered very safe for most adults and it is highly unlikely that it will cause any long-term damage. Please note, pregnant women are advised not to have x-rays as this could affect the foetus. If you have a broken limb, it might be uncomfortable holding this in place during the procedure.

The x-ray will only take a couple of minutes.

No, there is no need to worry about your x-ray as you won’t feel a thing. The only time you may experience some discomfort is when the radiographer is putting you into position.

Lyca Health accepts cover from all major health insurance companies. However, you do not need medical insurance if you wish to self-fund your x-ray.

X-rays work by using electromagnetic radiation to create images, you won’t be able to see or feel the x-ray. The electromagnetic radiation is passed through the area of the body being investigated. Soft tissues cannot absorb the rays but dense materials can. These differences show up as white and dark areas on the X-ray. Bones, which are denser, will show up as white whereas your heart, much softer, will show up much darker.

Usually, you can eat and drink as normal prior to an x-ray, but your radiographer will confirm this with you prior to the procedure. You should wear comfortable clothing and remove anything metallic such as jewellery or clothes with zips. You should also inform us beforehand if you are pregnant, as generally this procedure isn’t recommended for pregnant women (unless it is an emergency).

Your radiographer will ask you to lie or stand against a flat surface, where they will then position the area of your body that is being investigated. Next, they will move the x-ray machine into position, it is at this point your radiographer will go behind a screen, or into another room. During the procedure, it is important you remain very still in order for us to get the best images.

Generally, the x-ray procedure will be over within a couple of minutes, so after that, you are free to get on with your day! Here at Lyca Health, we strive to offer an efficient service that provides accurate results. With flexible appointment times to best work around you, your private X-ray in London will cause as little disruption to your day as possible.

To get an X-Ray appointment you will require a referral from a doctor. You can not book an appointment for a private x-ray by self referral.

If you do not have GP referral, our team can arrange for you to see one of our Private GPs who will be able to assess and issue you with a referral if required.
