Dr Melia is a highly experienced Consultant in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, with a broad background in acute general medicine. His hepatology interests include liver malignancy and portal hypertension, and he has contributed to pioneering research in variceal sclerotherapy.

He is an expert endoscopist, providing a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including oesophageal and gastric outlet stenting, variceal banding, PEG insertion and oesophageal dilatation. He previously delivered the ERCP service at Darent Valley Hospital and contributed to the on-call Upper GI bleeding endoscopy rota until December 2022.

Dr Melia is also a skilled colonoscopist, offering a full range of therapeutic interventions. His clinical interests include haemochromatosis, and he led the Hepatitis B and C antiviral treatment programme at Darent Valley Hospital. He is a member of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL).

He has held several senior leadership roles, including Upper GI Cancer Clinical Lead for the Trust and Kent & Medway Upper GI Cancer TSSG Lead, and has contributed to regional cancer networks and clinical governance.
