Professor Ala Aftab

Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist

Professor Ala is an internationally recognised Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist, specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of complex liver and gastrointestinal conditions. With a distinguished clinical and academic career, he is widely respected for his expertise in rare liver diseases and transplant-related care.

He currently holds consultant positions at King’s College Hospital and Royal Surrey in Guildford, where he combines expert patient care with leadership in groundbreaking research. As Chair of the Rare Liver Disease Special Interest Group for the British Liver Association, Professor Ala plays a key role in shaping national liver care strategies and driving collaboration in this highly specialised field.

Professor Ala obtained his medical degree from Charing Cross & Westminster Medical School (Imperial College) in 1992, followed by specialist training in general medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology at King’s College Hospital and the Royal Free Hospital in London. His international fellowships include advanced training in liver disease and transplantation at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, and a prestigious travelling fellowship at Yale University’s Wilson Disease Centre.

He also holds a PhD in Hepatology from University College London, where his Wellcome Trust-supported research focused on immune and inflammatory pathways linking liver and gut health.

His clinical interests include autoimmune liver disease, genetic liver conditions, liver transplantation and rare hepatobiliary disorders. Professor Ala is deeply committed to improving outcomes for patients with complex and underserved liver conditions through research, education and evidence-based care.
