Don’t Ignore the Early Signs of Bowel Cancer – What Your Gut Might Be Trying to Tell You

By Dr Aathavan Loganayagam, Consultant Gastroenterologist, LycaHealth Orpington

As a gastroenterologist with over 15 years of experience, I’ve seen how early intervention can change the course of a patient’s life. One of the most critical areas I focus on is bowel cancer – also known as colorectal cancer. It’s one of the most common cancers in the UK, but the good news is that when diagnosed early, bowel cancer can be treated effectively. That’s why it’s so important to recognise the early warning signs your body may be giving you – and to act on them.

At LycaHealth Orpington, we’ve created a modern and welcoming Endoscopy Centre, where you can get fast access to diagnostic tests such as colonoscopy and upper GI endoscopy. These tests are crucial for spotting issues early and providing peace of mind when it comes to your digestive health.

What are the early signs of bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer typically develops slowly, and often, the symptoms can be subtle at first. Many patients mistake these signs for common digestive complaints such as IBS or indigestion. However, knowing the key signs to watch out for can make all the difference:

  • A change in your bowel habits – This can include going to the toilet more often than usual, having looser stools, or the feeling that you haven’t fully emptied your bowels.
  • Blood in your stool – This may appear as bright red blood or dark, tarry stool. Even small amounts of blood should be checked by a doctor.
  • Unexplained weight loss – If you’re losing weight without trying, it could indicate an issue in your digestive system.
  • Persistent abdominal pain or bloating – If you’re feeling full or uncomfortable after meals, or having regular stomach pain, it might be time to get checked out.
  • Extreme tiredness – If you’re feeling unusually tired for no clear reason, it could be a sign of an underlying condition such as bowel cancer.

If you notice any of these symptoms lasting longer than a few weeks, it’s important to consult with a doctor. Even if you think it’s nothing serious, getting checked is always a safe bet. Early detection can dramatically improve treatment outcomes.

How can an endoscopy help?

An endoscopy is a medical procedure that allows us to look inside your digestive system using a flexible tube with a camera at the end. There are two types of endoscopy that are particularly useful for assessing symptoms of bowel cancer:

  • Colonoscopy – This procedure examines the entire colon (large bowel) and rectum, helping to identify polyps, tumours, and signs of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • Upper GI endoscopy – This procedure is used to check the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine for abnormalities, which can help rule out other digestive disorders.

Both procedures are quick and highly effective at spotting problems early, including signs of cancer. The process typically takes around 20 to 30 minutes, and you can often return home the same day. At LycaHealth Orpington, we offer sedation to make the procedure as comfortable as possible, so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the test.

We also have the technology to remove polyps (small growths) or take tissue samples (biopsies) for further testing. Detecting and removing polyps early on can help prevent bowel cancer from developing.

The importance of early detection

The earlier bowel cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. Early-stage bowel cancer often doesn’t cause pain, but it can be detected during a routine screening or when symptoms are still mild. For many people, a colonoscopy or endoscopy is the best way to find out what’s going on inside the gut.

What to expect during your endoscopy

Before the procedure, we’ll go through a full consultation with you to understand your symptoms and medical history. If you’re having a colonoscopy, you’ll need to follow specific dietary instructions and take a bowel prep solution to ensure your colon is clean for the test. The test itself is relatively quick – usually no longer than 30 minutes – and you’ll be sedated to keep you comfortable.

After the procedure, you can expect to relax in a recovery area for a short time before heading home. We’ll discuss the results with you, and if necessary, arrange follow-up care or treatment options.
