What can we test for?

Whether you have had unprotected sex or are concerned you’re showing symptoms of an STD, you should get screened as you could potentially have a sexually transmitted infection. The doctor or nurse will tell you what tests they think you need – and will explain why they are suggesting these tests.

If you test positive for an STI, you will be asked to go back to the clinic to talk about your results and the treatment you need. Many STIs can be cured with a short course of antibiotics. You will need to tell your sexual partner and any ex-partners that could also be infected so they can get the right test and treatments as well.

If you are concerned about catching an STI, for whatever reason, we also offer an STI vaccination service to give you peace of mind.

When you see a doctor or nurse, they will ask you some questions about your medical and sexual history before they carry out the test. This may include questions such as when you last had sex, if you have had unprotected sex, and if you have any symptoms.

The type of test depends on the STI being screened. This may include:

  • A urine sample
  • A blood sample
  • Swabs of the urethra
  • Swabs from the vagina or anus
  • Examination of your genitals
  • Same-day appointments

Genital rashes and itching can indicate an STI or STD, however, there are many other symptoms. Sometimes you may not present with any symptoms at all. If you’re sexually active, or are concerned you have symptoms of an STI or STD, we recommend you have a sexual health check as soon as possible.
