One-Stop Breast Clinic

At LycaHealth Orpington, we offer you the highest standard of care, especially in our breast services by offering where possible same or next day appointments. This allows fast access to consultations, scans, tests and treatment which gives you the peace of mind for any concerns.

Scans and Tests

Our breast clinics are designed to give you access to specialist breast consultants and a full range of scans and tests, including;

  • Breast ultrasound – This scanner can detect signs of breast cancer or other breast-related conditions by sending sound waves through the breast tissue.
  • Mammogram – Mammograms are X-rays designed for breasts. They can detect small amounts of cancer that can not be felt or seen. A mammographer will be female and the mammogram only takes a few minutes.
  • Breast MRI* scan (magnetic resonance imaging) – This scan will also be able to diagnose any breast cancer or other abnormalities in the chest area. This MRI machine uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create a detailed image of the inside the breast.
  • Vacuum assisted biopsy (VAB) – A biopsy which takes a small amount of tissue under local anaesthetic. This gives more information about the abnormality in your breast tissue.  A vacuum assisted biopsy (VAB) can be done using either ultrasound or X-ray guidance.

*Please note that breast MRI is not a same day service if required.

You will be informed by our team of any precautions to take before having any of the scans; breast MRI scan, breast ultrasound or a mammogram.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Please inform the team if you have any medical conditions, pacemakers, implants or you are pregnant.
  • You can eat and drink when having a breast MRI, Ultrasound scan or mammogram. Some procedures you might not be able to but you will be informed prior to appointment.
  • Please do not wear any jewellery, dentures or hearing aids in the imaging rooms. Any metal needs to be removed especially for the MRI scanners.
  • Do not wear deodorant as this can show white spots on your X-ray results.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that is easy to change out of; in a MRI you may be required to wear a gown that is provided and in a mammogram you will need to be bare from the waist up.

Any concerns or questions, please contact the team prior to your appointment.

No this will not always be the case. At LycaHealth Orpington, these are the ones we have available to help guide us to a full diagnose and treatment pathway. It will all depend on the results, in some cases we might need to have all scans to provide a clear result or in other cases results might be clear from only having one scan.

If you refer back to the scans and tests section, it explains what each one does and how they differ.

We have both female and male professional consultants that specialise in Breast Care at LycaHealth Orpington. If you have a preference of your consultant for your consultation please inform us at the point of booking.

We will offer a chaperone service for all your appointments if that again is something you feel would make your journey more comfortable, please let us know.
