Using LycaHealth’s state of the art scanners our consultants can take you step-by-step through the development of your baby. Our antenatal care will cover all the required blood, weight, height and urine tests that you and your baby need. We understand there’s a lot to think about when you’re pregnant, so our job is to take some of that stress away from you; helping to keep both you and your baby healthy.
You may have heard antenatal care being referred to as pregnancy care or maternity care, but ultimately they are the same thing; the care you receive during the course of your pregnancy. Our goal is to make sure that you’re receiving all the care and support you need to ensure that both you and your baby are as well as possible. You’ll attend regular appointments with us to assess your health, as well as ultrasounds scans and screen tests for you and your baby. You’re our priority, and we’ll be on hand throughout the whole process, to give you all the support you could possibly need.
Whilst having a baby is a very exciting time, it can also be quite overwhelming – especially when it’s your first pregnancy. To give you a better idea of what to expect, take a look at some of the following questions we’ll ask on your first appointment:
Following this, we’ll run through other important information and advice about your pregnancy. We might advise you to start taking folic acid if you’re not taking them already. Folic acid is really important in ensuring healthy development of the foetus, and can significantly reduce the risk of neural tube defects (NTDs).
We’ll also run through various other ways you can look after yourself throughout your pregnancy, including what type of exercise you should be doing and what sorts of food you should be avoiding. We’re passionate about providing a personal service to you and are here to guide you each and every step of the way.
Relatively early on in your pregnancy, we’ll offer to do some blood tests for you, in order to check on both you and your baby’s health. Some tests are offered to all women while others are only offered if you might be at risk of a particular infection or condition. We’ll look at various things such as the haemoglobin levels in your blood to test for anaemia, various infections and blood disorders.
You will also be offered blood tests for HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis in the early stages of pregnancy. We strongly recommend you have these tests to avoid passing any infection onto either your baby or your partner.
During this time, we’ll also look at your blood group, this is useful to know in case you need to be given blood at any time. This test will also tell us whether you are blood group rhesus negative or rhesus positive. If you are rhesus negative, you may need extra care to reduce the risk of rhesus disease, something that we can provide here at Lyca Health.
At the beginning, and throughout the course of your pregnancy, there are various checks we make sure you and your baby are doing well.
Some of these checks involve looking at your:
This is to determine your risk of developing conditions such as pre-eclampsia, diabetes and to assess the effects on your organs, such as your kidneys and lungs. If you’re worried about anything during this time, you should talk to us to see how we can help. Our job is to help make sure you’re healthy physically and mentally, so answering any of your questions and concerns if part of the service we provide to you.
One of the most exciting times during the pregnancy is getting to see your baby at your ultrasound scan. These are completely safe for both you and your baby, and you’ll be able to see images of your baby as it grows. Unlike NHS scans, where you’re only entitled to 2 scans, we offer you more opportunities to see your baby before it is born. Your private ultrasound scans come as part of the pregnancy package that we provide here in London, and you can find out more about this service here.
