Pain Management

At LycaHealth Orpington, we understand that living with chronic pain can have a big impact on your day to day life and mental wellbeing. Pain (acute or chronic) affects the back, neck, head and joints and is more than likely a symptom of other conditions.

What is Pain Management?

Pain management is a service which helps you regulate pain with medications, procedures, exercises and therapy. This service can either reduce or relieve you from the pain you are experiencing.

We offer expert non-surgical treatments for joint pain in our outpatient department. Our team of Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Consultants, Radiologists, Podiatrists, and Physiotherapists will work with you to access the type of pain you are experiencing. Using the latest technology to help to diagnose your pain and the best method of treatment.

Where possible our team will aim to manage your pain conservatively, often working together to find the optimal combination of treatments. This may be working with our Physiotherapists or through the use of medication.

The type of treatment we offer here at LycaHealth Orpington are the following;

  • Physiotherapy
  • Medication management
  • Radiofrequency (RF) procedures
  • Pain injections

Frequently Asked Questions

During treatment:

  • We will monitor your blood pressure and heart rate.
  • You will be positioned carefully and comfortable so that the area for the injection is easy to access. The skin area will be cleaned and a sterile drape will be applied.
  • In some cases, forms of image guidance will be used to guide the injection accurately.
  • Local anesthetic is injected to numb the skin and surrounding tissues. There can be a little discomfort at this stage but not for too long.
  • When the injections are given, there may be a feeling of pressure, tightness or a pushing sensation. Please make the team aware if there is any discomfort or any of these symptoms; tingling around the mouth, ringing in ears, feeling dizzy, blurred vision, muscle twitches or difficulty breathing.

After treatment:

After the procedure, you will be taken to our recovery ward where you will be monitored. You will then be assisted to get dressed and start moving.

You will be allowed to have pain relief after the treatment but only once you have been assessed to find out how much pain relief is necessary. More information and advice will be given once you have rested and ready to be discharged.

With our team of experts, we can manage and treat pain across the body. Injections are one methods of elevating the symptoms of pain and they can be performed in most joints including the knee, elbow, shoulder, back and ankle.

Every patient is different and we therefore, work with you to diagnose the most appropriate treatment pathway. What may work well for one patient, will not be so effective for another. Our aim is to use our consultant’s expertise and specialist diagnostic equipment to tailor your treatment plan.

We offer a range of spinal injections including Dorsal root ganglion block, Facet joint injection, Epidural injection, Epiduroplasty, Medial branch block injection, Sacroiliac joint injection, Radiofrequency denervation and Neurolytic root block.
