What is Diabetes and what are the signs to look out for?

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how the body processes glucose and sugar. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is when the body does not produce insulin, while Type 2 diabetes is when the body does not use insulin properly or does not produce enough of it.

Some common symptoms of diabetes include increased thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, extreme hunger, fatigue, and slow-healing cuts or bruises.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, please book an appointment for our diabetes clinic as soon as possible to determine if you have diabetes and to receive treatment.

Our Diabetes Services

Diabetes can be diagnosed through a variety of tests and services. One of the most common tests is a blood glucose test, which measures the amount of glucose in your blood after fasting or after drinking a sugary solution. Another blood test that could be used is a glycated haemoglobin (A1C) test which can measure the blood sugar levels over a longer period of time.

In addition, we could ask for a urine sample to measure the levels of ketones which can provide further information about the severity of diabetes.

Once we have the full picture of your diabetes, this is when we can offer support for your diet, medication and lifestyle changes. The team at LycaHealth Orpington are trained to educate you on the effects of diabetes, especially the complications of diabetes, to help support you with your diagnosis.
