Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT)
Shock wave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment for musculoskeletal injuries. At LycaHealth Physiotherapy we provide shock wave therapy in Canary Wharf, East London and Orpington, Kent.
Shock wave therapy is particularly effective for tendinopathies.
It can help those who experience ongoing pain from conditions like achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and tennis elbow.
It can also be used for stress fractures that have failed to join.
Originally used to break up kidney stones, ESWT is proving an effective treatment for musculoskeletal conditions. Shock wave technology uses pulses of high energy sound or pressure waves to encourage regeneration and growth of blood vessels, tendons, ligaments and bone.
ESWT can provide immediate pain relief and is often used after other non-invasive treatments have been unsuccessful. It also has very minor side effects when compared to alternative more invasive treatments like surgery and injections.
Frequently asked questions
Shock wave therapy is a treatment for musculoskeletal pain which uses shock waves to regenerate tissue and help promote healing.
Shock wave therapy is particularly effective for problems that affect the tendons and muscles like patellar tendonitis, achilles tendonitis and tennis elbow. During your consultation one of our expert physiotherapists will be able to advise if ESWT is a suitable treatment for your particular injury.
Similarly to an ultrasound, a gel is allied to the affected area, then a probe is placed against the area to be treated. Pulses are sent through the area. The specialist will start with low pulses of energy and build up to stronger pulses. Whilst ESWT can be uncomfortable it should not be painful.
