I qualified in Dublin and trained as a General and Vascular Surgeon in London before being appointed as a consultant in 2002.
I was part of that group of surgeons who realised that laser venous surgery was a fabulous alternative to vein stripping. I could treat varicose veins under local anaesthetic or general anaesthetic as a walk in, walk out procedure that was minimally invasive. I pioneered Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT) in the NHS and in the private sector. I have done more than a thousand procedures a year for over 20 years.
Many vein problems are ignored due to prejudice. They aren’t “ just cosmetic”. Night- cramp, pain, itchy sore skin, ankle swelling and skin bleeding can be difficult daily problems. Vein clotting can produce severe pain and ulcers can take months to heal. Varicose veins are not always visible and a simple scan in outpatients can diagnose a problem easily. The cosmetic treatment of veins can add hugely to a person’s self-confidence and can be life-affirming. The medical treatment of varicose veins can make a massive difference to your quality of life.
