Forget the thousand-mile journey. Take the little steps to success.

31.01.2017

The first month of 2017 is drawing to a close and many of us are already finding the optimistic resolve felt at the start of the year dissipating, as one resolution after another starts to crumble and fade.

At LycaHealth, we’re not about to start tut-tutting, even though we very much want you to enjoy good health in 2017. Modern living involves coping with relentless pressure and pervasive stress. It’s not remotely surprising that many of us find our enthusiastic desire to turn over a new leaf starting to wane after a few weeks of that kind of attrition.

Our message is simple: make your resolutions daily, practical steps, not annual declarations of good intent and start to enjoy the cumulative benefits that quietly but steadily arise when you relinquish quick-fix pleasures.

That compulsory wine at the end of a hectic day, the craving for a sweet biscuit when the shrapnel’s flying at work, the decision to give the gym a miss because you’re too tired, … all of these temptations and more will gradually evaporate if you substitute the pleasure of small but significant daily reforms.

Let’s take a few of the most commonly failed resolutions. Like losing weight. Our daily solution? Eat more, not less. But eat the right foods: a blend of fibre-rich complex carbs and protein will keep hunger at bay and help you lose weight. In addition, drop the habit of three square meals a day; go for six of these smaller meals instead.

Then there’s the aim to spend more time at the gym. But how productive is that? A recent Canadian study found that college students performing high-intensity 20-second reps of a single exercise (pushups, jumping jacks, burpees, etc.) followed by 10 seconds of rest increased their aerobic fitness by 7 to 8 per cent after four weeks. They only exercised for four days each week, with each session consisting of just 8 repetitions of their routine over 4 minutes.

At LycaHealth Canary Wharf, we believe we can all snatch success from the jaws of failure by applying this ‘small daily steps philosophy.’ With our small steps, you will gradually find your energy improving and your weight declining.

Forget the thousand-mile journey. Enjoy your resolution to take the little steps every day instead.
